Jockeys and Work Riders
Derek joined Arlary in October 2013. At that time he had ridden 27 winners, principally for Noel Kelly and Mark Mcniff. Derek caught our eye when winning on the good mare Charlie's Vic and is an excellent schooling jockey at home. He had his first winner for us on The Friary at Hexham in November 2013 and has continued to have winners for us, in particular over fences. Derek has experience backing youngsters and riding and training winners, having trained his own point to pointers. With Peter Buchanan's retirement in April 2016, Derek took on the mantle of stable jockey and his enthusiasm for getting each horse ready for its race is contagious. In 2017 Derek shot into the limelight when winning the Aintree Grand National on One For Arthur who he gave a patient ride, producing him in the last half mile to win. Derek combines strength and sense in a race and carries out race tactics with a cool head.
Blair joined us in the summer of 2016, riding out and keen to take out his conditional license again. He had previously ridden winners in point to points, where he was the Northern Area novice champion and under rules including for Alistair Whillans and Nick Alexander. Blair has had a good grounding with bringing on young horses, and is excellent with any quirky ones; his patience and skill has led to wins with the headstrong Saint Freule and also multiple wins on older horses such as Thorpe, Bialco, young stars such as Mighty Thunder and many mares including the multiple winners Haul Us In, Catchthemoonlight, Aurra Thunder and Calle Malve. Cool in a race, he can carry out riding instructions to the letter and his results have led to more rides for the yard and outsiders. In his spare time he likes to head to the golf course.
Stephen is a very proficient conditional who joined us from Nick Alexander in the summer of 2016. Previously working for John Oxx, Nicky Richards and Maurice Barnes, Stephen brings plenty of experience and has a great way with the horses. He is a great asset at home and on the track, and is particularly good with the less straightforward horses. He had an excellent season in 2018/19 striking up good partnerships with the winning chasers Ryalex and OrionInverness. He will continue to be well supported by this yard.
One of our successful conditional jockeys Thomas joined in June 2017 from Stuart Coltherd’s, and having had 30 point to point rides. Hailing from Selkirk he is a big fan of the common riding in the borders. Thomas’ first win for Lucinda came on Rivabodiva at Ayr on the 30th of October 2017 and has continued on an upward curve, since then riding winners for us and for outside yards.
Patrick had his first season point to pointing in 2018 and joined us in the summer, choosing Lucinda Russell Racing over school despite some great exam results. He is a keen young boy who rode in point to points in 2018/19 and was awarded his conditional license in March 2020. An effective work rider he has the knack of keeping the horses in a great rhythm and working them efficiently. His favourite horse was Forest Des Aigles who he produced to the minute. Patrick will ride for us as a very useful ten pound claimer in 2020.

Joining us full time in 2019 at just 16 years of age, Gregor has been involved with horses for as long as he can remember having sat on a pony from the moment he could walk. He was steered in our direction by his uncle and joined as a work rider in November 2019 just a month after leaving school. A participant in British eventing and a keen follower of rugby, he loves nothing more than riding horses in his spare time and has designs on becoming a jockey in the future.
